Most Japanese futons come in a set including a mat, blanket, sheet and pad which is usually made from foam. However, western futons are usually enclosed in a cover and come in one piece.

A Futon should be carefully folded into three when it is not being used taking care that only the underneath comes into contact with the floor. The frame and surrounding floor area should be kept as clean as possible.

It is a good idea to air the futon when it is not in use. If the air quality is good and free from humidity, hang the futon outside and shake it gently. This will get rid of any dust and stale smells. Using a vacuum cleaner can be particularly effective in removing dust mites etc.
